ST.
NICHOLAS CATHEDRAL – the church dates back to the middle
of the 13th century. It was erected in the central point of
the Old Town, and was reconstructed a number of times on the
turn of the centuries. As the Elbląg Diocese was set up, it
became a cathedral. Its most precious collection includes:
Gothic bronze baptismal font of 1387, made by master
Bernhauser, wooden statutes of the apostles, large Gothic
sculpture of St. Nicholas, and the Three Magi altar.
MARKET
GATE – it is a fragment of old town fortifications of
the 14th century. A legend of the times of Polish and
Teutonic wars is associated with the Market Gate. An Elbląg
baker's journeyman noticed the invaders in time, and cut the
rope holding the grate with his spade. The grate fell down
and prevented the Teutonic Knights from conquering the town.
A monument of the heroic journeyman is to be founded at the
Gate soon.
ELBLĄG
OLD TOWN – with the historic town development system,
homesteads at the castle foot, cloister and hospital unit,
the Church Lane characteristic of Elbląg, complex of
reconstructed houses; it is a place for every tourist to
visit. As a result of the Second World War, the Old Town,
whose beauty was not beaten by the Old Town in Gdańsk, was
destroyed in 65 %. The Old Town has been under
reconstruction for over ten years. The houses now being
build correspond to the old style. The area of the Old Town
is an El dorado for researchers of the past, being the
largest archeological range in Europe. The objects or their
parts, obtained by archeologists, go to the Museum of Elbląg.
Numerous cafes, pubs, and pizzerias await tourists in the
Old Town.

GALERIA
EL – contemporary art center, housed in the
post-Dominican Our Lady Church of the 13th century.
Sepulchral stones with epitaphs are preserved, reminding of
merits for the town contributed by representatives of noble
and merchant families, town patricians, and the clergy. It
was made famous by the first in the world Biennale of
Spatial Forms in 1965. Its reputation is additionally
strengthened by a long list of artists enjoying worldwide
fame.
MUSEUM OF ELBLĄG – it is housed in the building of
the former Elbląg Gymnasium. There is a Gothic column in the
yard, the only remnant of the Teutonic castle, pulled down
by Elbląg residents in 1454. At the museum, one may view the
history of Elbląg, see numerous objects relating to everyday
life of former residents, coming from the excavations in the
Old Town and the legendary village of Truso, as well as
military accessories, old prints, furniture, and coins.
ELBLĄG LIBRARY – it
is housed in the Holy Ghost church and hospital complex.
Over centuries, the town councilors and rectors of the time
collected a number of precious works from different fields
of life. The last documented information mentions 58,000
books. After the Second World War, the Elbląg book
collection was deposited at the library of Toruń University.
As from November 2000, the old collection has been gradually
coming back from Toruń to Elbląg.
